In this unit, children learn about themselves, their friends and their community, and about feelings, calming down, healthy and safe habits, and moving their bodies. They talk about what makes them special, practise making and keeping friends, explore the many groups they belong to and how those groups together make up Canada, learn about the people and places in their community, respect differences (including learning about First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples), stand up for themselves and others, and find ways to care for the Earth. Then they name feelings, practise calm-down tools, learn healthy habits, learn to stay safe online and in person, and play active games that build balance, coordination, flexibility, and big and small muscles.
Every lesson is written for a grown-up to read aloud and do together with a 4 or 5 year old, with lots of talk, play, movement and hands-on activities. Children answer by talking, pointing or showing.
