What would you do if...?

If you won a trip, where would you go? Magazines love quizzes that ask What would you do if...? In French, these questions use two tools: si + imparfait for the imaginary situation, and the conditionnel for the answer.

Remember from Grade 7: you learned the futur simple (j'irai) and a few polite verbs in the conditionnel (je voudrais, pourriez-vous, ce serait). This year you will use the conditionnel with every verb and every subject. Take the quiz below and count your A's, B's and C's!

A sandy tropical beach with palm trees, turquoise water and an empty lounge chair under an umbrella.
Si tu gagnais un voyage, où irais-tu ? A beach like this might be one answer. Si + imparfait sets up the dream; the conditionnel gives the answer. AI-generated image

Let's read (and take) a magazine quiz

(a magazine quiz written for this lesson)

Glossaire: gagner = to win · le canot-camping = canoe camping (used in Québec and other parts of Canada) · libre = free · le sommet = the top · à pied = on foot · une poutine = fries with cheese curds and gravy · une boussole = a compass · un carnet = a notebook · un paysage = a landscape · un oreiller = a pillow · en retard = late · réagir = to react · de mauvaise humeur = in a bad mood · surtout = mostly

  1. Form (C2): a title asking a question about the reader, numbered questions, three choices (A, B, C), and a results section. It speaks directly to the reader with tu.
  2. Purpose: to entertain and to help readers think about themselves. It is not a scientific test!
  3. The pattern in every question: Si tu gagnais (si + imparfait) → où irais-tu ? (conditionnel).
  4. The answers are all in the conditionnel: j'irais, je visiterais, je resterais, je dormirais, je monterais, je mangerais, je ferais, je lirais, je serais.
  5. A real possibility in the results: Si tu voyages un jour, n'oublie pas ton oreiller ! (si + present → imperative). This is advice for something that could really happen.
  6. Canadian references: canoe camping in Algonquin Park, Mount Royal in Montréal, poutine and hockey.

The quiz uses si + imparfait for imaginary situations and the conditionnel for the answers. The results describe three kinds of travellers: adventurous (A), curious and creative (B), or comfort-loving (C).

Le conditionnel = radical du futur + terminaisons de l'imparfaitinfinitifradical du futurconditionnelallerir-j'iraisêtreser-je seraisfairefer-tu feraisavoiraur-il auraitpouvoirpourr-nous pourrionspartirpartir-ils partiraientterminaisons : -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient
To form the conditionnel, use the same stem as the futur simple (Grade 7) and the same endings as the imparfait.

Two kinds of si sentences

1. Real possibilities: ***si* + présent** → futur, présent or impératif.

(It might really happen.)

(I don't have a million dollars; I'm imagining.)
  • Si j'étais premier ministre, je ferais...

The two parts can switch places: Je voyagerais partout si j'avais un million.

Golden rule: never put the futur or the conditionnel right after si (meaning if). Si j'aurais is a very common mistake (it's wrong!).

Is it real or imaginary? Real: si + present. Imaginary: si + imparfait, then the conditionnel. Never the conditionnel right after si.
Worked example

Let's write a "Si j'étais..." paragraph

  2. Results in the conditionnel: ... je construirais une piste cyclable devant chaque école.
  3. More ideas, with different verbs: Les autobus seraient gratuits pour les jeunes.
  4. A reason: Comme ça, les élèves pourraient aller à l'école à vélo.
  5. Ending with a real possibility (si + présent): Si vous êtes d'accord, écrivez-moi !
  6. Check: no conditionnel after si; future stems (ser-, pourr-); imparfait endings.

Just for fun

In English, something that will never happen happens "when pigs fly." In French, it happens quand les poules auront des dents (when hens have teeth).

Hands-on activity

Make your own family quiz

You need: paper, a pencil, and 2 or 3 family members to take the quiz.

  1. Choose a title: Quel genre de chef es-tu ? Quel animal serais-tu ? Quel genre d'élève du secondaire seras-tu ?
  2. Write 4 questions with Si + imparfait and a conditionnel: Si tu préparais un souper, qu'est-ce que tu cuisinerais ? (le souper = supper, used in Québec and other parts of Canada)
  3. Write 3 answers (A, B, C) for each question, all in the conditionnel.
  4. Write a Résultats section (Surtout des A : ...) with at least one si + présent sentence.
  5. Give the quiz to your family (translate if needed) and read them their results.

Look for: si + imparfait in every question, conditionnel answers, and no conditionnel after si.

Which feature is typical of a magazine quiz?

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Your child reads a magazine quiz (C1), explains its form and purpose (C2), and writes about imaginary situations (D1). The grammar focus is the conditionnel with all verbs and the two kinds of si sentences.

How to help:

  • Remind your child: the conditionnel stem is the same as the futur stem from Grade 7.

Common difficulties:

  • Si j'aurais (wrong) instead of si j'avais. This is a classic mistake, even for some francophones in casual speech; in school writing, it is always si + imparfait.
  • Mixing up je mangerai (futur, will) and je mangerais (conditionnel, would). They sound almost the same; look at the ending in writing.

Canadian French used (used in Québec and other parts of Canada): le canot-camping, un jeu-questionnaire; la poutine is a dish from Québec enjoyed across Canada.
