  • I can replace a direct object with le, la, l' or les and put it before the verb: On la remplit.
  • I can place the pronoun correctly in a negative sentence and with aller + infinitive.
  • I can write clear instructions and answers to questions for a reader.

Words to know

un texte procédural
A how-to text: it explains how to make or do something, step by step.
le complément direct
The direct object: the person or thing that receives the action, with no preposition (Je lave le carton).
un pronom
A short word that replaces a noun so you don't repeat it.
le référent
The noun that a pronoun refers to.
l'impératif
The command form: Lave, Découpe, Remplis.
le matériel
The materials (supplies) you need.

Avoid repeating yourself

Read this: Je prends la mangeoire. Je lave la mangeoire. J'accroche la mangeoire. Boring, right?

Good writers replace repeated nouns with pronouns: Je prends la mangeoire. Je la lave. Je l'accroche.

In Grade 5 you learned the command form (Mélange ! Coupe !) for recipes. Today you will read instructions for a winter bird feeder and learn the pronouns le, la, l', les. Good readers always ask: What does this pronoun replace?

Worked example

Let's read a how-to text

  1. Features: a title that tells you the goal, a short introduction (why), a materials list, numbered steps in order, command verbs (Lave, Dessine, Découpe, Fais, Remplis, Accroche), a safety note (Avec un adulte) and a FAQ section.
  2. Purpose and audience: to teach young readers how to help birds in winter. The writer uses tu commands, so the audience is a young person.
  3. Find the pronouns and their référents: On la met → la mangeoire. on la voit → la mangeoire. On les ramasse → les graines. on ne le donne pas → le pain. Aide-les → les oiseaux. laisse-le sécher → le carton.
  4. Where is the pronoun? In normal sentences it goes before the verb: On la remplit. In a positive command it goes after the verb with a hyphen: Aide-les ! Laisse-le sécher.
  5. Inference: why put the feeder near a window? So that you can watch the birds from inside.

To make the feeder: wash and dry a carton, cut two windows with an adult, add a stick perch, add a string, fill with seeds and hang it near a window. Don't give birds bread.

A black-capped chickadee perches on a homemade milk-carton bird feeder filled with sunflower seeds, hanging from a snowy branch.

ReplacesPronounExample
a masculine singular noun (le carton, le pain)leJe lave le carton. → Je le lave.
a feminine singular noun (la mangeoire)laOn remplit la mangeoire. → On la remplit.
le or la before a vowel or silent hl'J'accroche la mangeoire. → Je l'accroche.
a plural noun (les graines, les oiseaux)lesOn ramasse les graines. → On les ramasse.
Direct object pronouns for things and people. They look like the articles le, la, les, but they come before the verb.
Je lavele cartonJelelave. On remplitla mangeoireOnlaremplit.J'accrochela mangeoireJel'accroche. On ramasseles grainesOnlesramasse. The pronoun matches the noun and jumps in front of the verb.
Each pronoun matches the noun it replaces (le, la, l', les) and moves in front of the verb.

Where does the pronoun go?

  • Present: before the verb: Je la vois.
  • Negative: between ne and the verb: Je ne la vois pas.
  • Aller + infinitive: before the infinitive: Je vais la remplir.
  • Positive command: after the verb, with a hyphen: Remplis-la ! (Negative command: Ne la remplis pas !)

Don't confuse it with the article: in Je lave le carton, le is an article (before a noun). In Je le lave, le is a pronoun (before a verb).

Worked example

Let's answer FAQ questions with pronouns

Answer 3 questions about the feeder, using a pronoun instead of the underlined noun: 1) Est-ce que tu nettoies la mangeoire ? 2) Est-ce que tu donnes le pain aux oiseaux ? 3) Quand est-ce que tu vas remplir les mangeoires ?

  1. 1. la mangeoire is feminine singular → la, before nettoie: Oui, je la nettoie chaque mois.
  2. 2. le pain → le; negative → ne before the pronoun, pas after the verb: Non, je ne le donne pas aux oiseaux.
  3. 3. les mangeoires → les; with aller + infinitive, the pronoun goes before the infinitive: Je vais les remplir samedi.
  4. Check: each pronoun matches the gender and number of the noun it replaces.
  1. Oui, je la nettoie chaque mois. 2) Non, je ne le donne pas aux oiseaux. 3) Je vais les remplir samedi.
Just for fun

Funny but true: in French, birds don't say tweet tweet. They say cui-cui! So a full feeder probably means: Cui-cui ! Merci !

Hands-on activity

Make a feeder or write a how-to

Safety: a grown-up does or supervises all cutting. Hang the feeder where it is safe to reach (no ladders without an adult).

You need: a washed milk carton, scissors (with an adult), a pencil and ruler, a stick, string, birdseed. Or, if you can't make the feeder, just paper and a pencil.

  1. Option A: Follow the French instructions above to make the feeder. Read each step aloud before doing it.
  2. Option B: Write your own French how-to for something you know how to do (make a snow fort, tie skates, make a sandwich). Include a title, a materials list, at least 5 numbered steps with command verbs, and a safety note if needed.
  3. Add a Questions fréquentes section with 3 questions and answers that use le, la, l' or les.
  4. Give your instructions to a family member. Can they follow them without asking you anything?

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Your child reads a procedural text, identifies its features (C2) and tracks what pronouns refer to, an important comprehension skill (C1). They then write clear instructions and answers for a reader (D1). Direct object pronouns are new in Grade 7.

How to help:

  • Play Qu'est-ce que c'est ?: you say Je la mets sur ma tête en hiver and your child guesses (la tuque).
  • When your child reads any text, stop at a pronoun and ask Who or what is that?

Common difficulties:

  • Putting the pronoun after the verb as in English (Je vois la).
  • Choosing the wrong gender: le or la must match the noun.
  • Confusing the article le and the pronoun le.

Safety: any cutting is done or supervised by an adult; place the feeder within safe reach.
