A. Developing the Skills, Strategies, and Habits Needed to Succeed

Skills, Strategies and Habits for Success

This unit opens Ontario's Grade 10 Career Studies course (GLC2O, Open, half credit) with Strand A: Developing the Skills, Strategies, and Habits Needed to Succeed. You will learn what it takes to succeed, not just once but again and again, in school, in life and at work, while keeping a healthy school/life/work balance.

In the first six lessons (expectation A1) you will sort out the difference between skills, strategies and habits, build resilience and perseverance for times of change, learn to turn setbacks into progress with feedback, self-advocacy and initiative, recognize stress in your mind, body and spirit, build a personal stress-management toolkit, and use time-management tools to protect your balance, including learning respectfully about First Nations, Métis and Inuit approaches to harmony and balance.

In the next four lessons (expectation A2) you will use decision-making strategies (mind maps, pros and cons, weighted criteria lists and seeking advice) to set personal, social, educational and career/life goals; link short-, medium- and long-term goals; monitor and revise them; and reflect on and document the whole process in your Individual Pathways Plan.

Each lesson has a worked example, a hands-on activity you can do at home, four sets of practice questions with answers, and a short quiz. The unit ends with a review. The goals and records you create here will help in the next two units: Exploring and Preparing for the World of Work and Planning and Financial Management to Help Meet Postsecondary Goals.

B. Exploring and Preparing for the World of Work

Exploring and Preparing for the World of Work

This unit covers Strand B of Ontario's Grade 10 Career Studies course (GLC2O, Open, half credit): Exploring and Preparing for the World of Work. It builds on the skills, goals and Individual Pathways Plan you started in Unit A.

In B1 (Lessons 1 to 4) you will look at the technological, economic and social trends changing work in Canada, using current labour-market data with dates and sources; learn your rights and responsibilities as a worker in Ontario, including recent laws for gig work and AI in hiring; explore how transferable skills are built in school, extracurricular activities and the community; and reflect on your own skills with evidence and the STAR method.

In B2 (Lessons 5 to 8) you will build a personal profile of your interests, values, skills, strengths and needs; analyse the influences and barriers that shape your choices; manage your digital footprint and protect your privacy and personal information; and learn to network both in person and online.

In B3 (Lessons 9 and 10) you will use a research process to compare postsecondary destinations (apprenticeship, college, university, the workplace and more) and draft a course plan with the programs and supports that can get you there.

Each lesson has a worked example, a hands-on activity you can do at home, four sets of practice questions with answers, and a short quiz. The unit ends with a review. Facts and figures are current as of October 2026; wages, job numbers and requirements change, so check the date on any number you use.

C. Planning and Financial Management to Help Meet Postsecondary Goals

Planning and Financial Management for Life After High School

This unit completes Ontario's Grade 10 Career Studies course (GLC2O, Open, half credit, revised 2019) with Strand C: Planning and Financial Management to Help Meet Postsecondary Goals. You will plan your first year after high school and learn to pay for it.

Part 1: Creating a postsecondary plan (C1). You will choose and refine a goal for your first postsecondary year among the five destinations (apprenticeship, college, community living, university and the workplace), plan backward from it with steps, strategies, opportunities, challenges and a Plan B, and build the tools to communicate your skills: a résumé, a cover letter, interview answers, a career-oriented online profile and application essays for scholarships and co-op.

Part 2: Budgeting and financial management (C2). You will learn the fundamentals of financial responsibility (banking, bills, credit and protecting yourself from fraud), compare savings options (including TFSAs, RRSPs and RESPs), compare forms of borrowing (including OSAP and payday loans), read a paycheque with CPP, EI and income tax deductions, and build a budget for your first postsecondary year.

Financial literacy graduation requirement. Students who started Grade 9 in 2025-26 or later must meet Ontario's financial literacy requirement inside this course: TVO modules and test questions, at least 70% to meet it, up to two attempts, worth 5% of the course mark. Lesson 10 explains it, and Lessons 5 to 10 teach all seven topics it covers, building on your Grade 9 math financial literacy unit.

About the numbers: wages, rates, limits and rules in this unit are 2026 values from official sources (Government of Ontario, Canada Revenue Agency, ontario.ca/osap, CDIC, FSRA), with dates. Prices in budgets and loan comparisons are clearly marked examples. Always check current numbers before a real decision.

Each lesson has a worked example, diagrams, a hands-on activity, four sets of practice questions with answers and a short quiz. The unit ends with a review. It builds on the first two units of the course, Skills, Strategies and Habits for Success and Exploring and Preparing for the World of Work.
