Patterns, Equality and Coding: Unit Review

C1.1 C1.2 C1.3 C1.4 C2.1 C2.2 C2.3 C3.1 C3.2About 40 minutes
Learning goals
  • I can find, make, translate and extend patterns, and find missing parts.
  • I can tell what changes and what stays the same, and use = and โ‰  correctly.
  • I can write, run and fix code to move a robot or solve a math problem.

Words to know

core
The smallest part of a repeating pattern that repeats over and over.
translate
Show the same pattern using different things.
pattern rule
Tells how a pattern works, like the core or what to add each time.
equal sign (=)
Means the same amount as.
code
A list of instructions, followed in order.
bug
A mistake in code.

Time to show what you know!

In this unit you were a pattern detective, a balance expert and a coder. This review has a few questions from every lesson. Try each one, then press Show answer to check.

If a question is tricky, that is okay! Go back to that lesson and look again.

Pattern detectiveBalance expertCoderABBABBcoreFind the core:A B B3 + 24 + 1Both sides are 5, so3 + 2 = 4 + 1Steps in order:right 2, up 1
The three big ideas of this unit: find the core that repeats, keep both sides of the = sign the same amount, and give Beep clear steps in order.

Patterns Around Us

1

What is the core? ๐ŸŽˆ ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽˆ ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ

2

Is this a pattern? ๐Ÿ”ด ๐Ÿ”ด ๐Ÿ”ต ๐Ÿ”ด ๐Ÿ”ต ๐Ÿ”ต ๐Ÿ”ด

3

Name a pattern you might see on a quilt, a hockey jersey or a fence.

Making and Translating Patterns

1

Name this pattern with letters: ๐Ÿข ๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿข ๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿ‡

2

Translate clap, snap, clap, snap into numbers.

3

Are 3 3 7 3 3 7 and hop, hop, spin, hop, hop, spin the same pattern?

Repeating patternThe core (circle, triangle,triangle) repeats again and again.Growing pattern246Add 2 each time: 2, 4, 6, ...
A repeating pattern has a core that comes back again and again. A growing pattern gets bigger by the same amount each time, like these towers: 2, 4, 6.

Pattern Rules, Predictions and Missing Parts

1

What comes next? 12, 14, 16, ___

2

What is missing? ๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŠ ๐ŸŽ ___ ๐ŸŠ

3

In the pattern ๐Ÿ”ต ๐ŸŸก ๐Ÿ”ต ๐ŸŸก ..., what colour is the 6th term?

4

Is 10, 20, 30, 40 a repeating pattern or a growing pattern?

Number Patterns to 50

1

Continue: 25, 30, 35, ___, ___

2

On the 50 chart, what number is right below 31?

3

Continue: 1, 11, 21, ___

What Changes and What Stays the Same

1

Does the number of people in a swimming pool change or stay the same?

2

Does the number of wheels on a car change or stay the same?

3

In the pattern 2, 4, 6, 8, what stays the same?

Equal and Not Equal: Keeping the Balance

1

Equal or not equal? 6 + 1 and 3 + 4

2

Which sign goes in the box, = or โ‰ ? 9 โˆ’ 4 โ˜ 2 + 2

3

Find the missing number: 7 + ___ = 6 + 4

4

True or false? 15 + 15 = 30

Coding: Step-by-Step Instructions

1

The star is 1 square right and 2 squares up from Beep. Write the code.

2

Run this code. START with 20 โ†’ Add 5 โ†’ Add 5 โ†’ SAY the number

3

Put the steps for making toast in order: Spread the butter. Put bread in the toaster. Take out the toast. Push down the lever.

Reading and Changing Code: Fixing Bugs

1

The star is 3 squares to the left of Beep. The code says โžก Move right 3. What is the bug?

2

Code: Start with 0, Add 10, Add 10, Add 10. The outcome is 30. Change the code so the outcome is 40.

3

Morning code: 1. Eat breakfast. 2. Wake up. 3. Get dressed. What is the bug?

Just for fun

What is a robot's favourite snack?

Computer chips!

How to use this review

  • Do one or two sections a day, not the whole review at once.
  • Let your child try each question before pressing Show answer. Ask How do you know? even when the answer is right.
  • Use real objects (blocks, coins, toys, cereal) for patterns and equal sides, and a floor grid for Beep's code.
  • Each section is named after a lesson. If a section feels hard, go back to that lesson's examples and More practice questions, then try the review again another day.

Quiz

1.

What is the core of this pattern? ๐Ÿž ๐Ÿž ๐ŸŒธ ๐Ÿž ๐Ÿž ๐ŸŒธ

2.

Which letters name this pattern? hop, clap, hop, clap

3.

What comes next? 3, 5, 7, ___

4.

What is missing? 10, 20, 30, ___, 50

5.

On the 50 chart, what number is right below 14?

6.

Which amount stays the same?

7.

Which is true?

8.

Find the missing number: 2 + ___ = 4 + 4

9.

What number does this code say? START with 10 โ†’ Add 10 โ†’ Take away 5 โ†’ SAY the number

10.

Beep needs to go 3 squares right. The code says Move right 2. How do you fix the bug?

For parents and teachers

Use this review to see which lessons need another look. Each practice section and most quiz questions match one lesson.

What mistakes tell you

  • Patterns Around Us: calls a mixed-up line a pattern, or names the whole line as the core. Revisit finding where the core starts again.
  • Making and Translating Patterns: changes the rule while translating (AAB becomes AB), or mixes up the letters. Line the two patterns up, one under the other.
  • Pattern Rules, Predictions and Missing Parts: guesses the next term from only the last number (says 8 after 1, 3, 5, 7), or loses track when predicting. Have your child say the rule out loud and touch-count each term.
  • Number Patterns to 50: switches to counting by 1s partway through (20, 30, 40, 41), or mixes up above and below on the 50 chart. Point along a printed 50 chart.
  • What Changes and What Stays the Same: says an amount stays the same because it has not changed today. Ask: Could it be different tomorrow?
  • Equal and Not Equal: adds every number they see (writes 10 in 2 + ___ = 4 + 4), or thinks = means the answer comes next. Go back to the balance and work out the known side first.
  • Coding: Step-by-Step Instructions: counts the starting square as a move, or mixes up left and right. Act out the code on a floor grid.
  • Reading and Changing Code: rewrites all the code instead of finding the one wrong step. Run the code one step at a time and stop where it goes wrong.

If your child gets most of a section right and can explain how they know, they are ready to move on.
