What did you do last weekend?

In Grade 5 you talked about now (the present: je joue) and about plans (the futur proche: je vais jouer). But what about things that already happened? To tell a story about yesterday, a trip or last weekend, French uses the passé composé.

In this lesson you will read a real-looking blog post about a winter trip and then write your own.

hieraujourd'huidemainpassé composéj'ai jouéprésentje jouefutur procheje vais jouer
Three time words, three tenses: yesterday (passé composé), today (present), tomorrow (futur proche).

How to build the passé composé

The passé composé has two parts:

avoir (in the present) + past participle

  • J'ai joué. I played.
  • Tu as fini. You finished.
  • Elle a attendu. She waited.

You already know the present of avoir from Grade 5: j'ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont. Now you just add a past participle!

Verb endingPast participleExample
-er → -éjouer → joué, manger → mangé, patiner → patinéNous avons patiné.
-ir → -ifinir → fini, choisir → choisiIl a choisi une tire.
-re → -uattendre → attendu, vendre → venduJ'ai attendu l'autobus.
Regular past participles. The -é in jouer → joué sounds the same as the -er ending, so you must write the accent!
infinitivechange the endingpast participlejouer-er → -éjouéfinir-ir → -ifiniattendre-re → -uattenduNous avons patiné. · Il a choisi. · J'ai attendu l'autobus.
Regular past participles follow the verb's ending: -er → -é, -ir → -i, -re → -u.
InfinitivePast participleExample
fairefaitJ'ai fait du ski.
avoireuNous avons eu froid.

---

Commentaires (2)

Félix : Salut Zoé ! Moi, j'ai fait du ski de fond avec mon père. J'ai vu un renard !

Amira : Super, tes photos ! Nous n'avons pas patiné, mais nous avons construit un fort de neige.

  1. Features of a blog: the blog's name, a post title, the date published, short paragraphs, a question to the readers, and comments from readers.
  2. Find the passé composé: nous avons visité, nous avons patiné, Il a fait, J'ai porté, nous avons mangé, a choisi, n'a pas fini, nous avons pris, nous avons vu, J'ai pris, j'ai lu, j'ai écrit. Each one is avoir + participle.
  3. Time words tell us it is the past: la fin de semaine dernière, samedi matin, l'après-midi, le soir.
  4. Negative: il n'a pas fini (he didn't finish). Ne ... pas goes around avoir, not around the participle.
  5. Canadian context: the Bal de Neige is Ottawa's winter festival (Winterlude in English), and people skate on the Rideau Canal when the ice is ready. Mitaines is the Canadian French word for mittens.
  6. The comments answer Zoé's question: Félix went cross-country skiing (ski de fond) and saw a fox; Amira built a snow fort (construire → construit).

Zoé skated on the Rideau Canal, ate maple taffy on snow, took the bus to see ice sculptures, and read and wrote in the evening. Her little brother didn't finish his taffy!

Negatives in the passé composé

Put ne (n') ... pas around the helping verb:

  • J'ai fini. → Je n'ai pas fini.
  • Nous avons patiné. → Nous n'avons pas patiné.
  • Ils ont vu le renard. → Ils n'ont pas vu le renard.

Ne becomes n' before a vowel: n'ai, n'as, n'a, n'avons, n'avez, n'ont.

Just for fun

Funny-but-true: to make tire d'érable, you pour hot maple syrup onto clean snow and roll it up on a stick. It's a treat where the snow is part of the kitchen! 🍁❄️

Worked example

Let's write a blog comment together

Write a 3-sentence comment for Zoé's blog about a pretend weekend: you went sledding (faire de la luge; in Québec and other parts of Canada, also glisser), you drank hot chocolate, and you didn't watch TV.

  1. Greeting: a blog comment to a kid is friendly: Salut Zoé !
  2. Sentence 1: faire → fait: Samedi, j'ai fait de la luge avec ma cousine.
  3. Sentence 2: boire → bu: Ensuite, nous avons bu un chocolat chaud.
  4. Sentence 3, negative: regarder → regardé: Je n'ai pas regardé la télé !
  5. Check: every verb has avoir + participle; the -é has its accent; ne ... pas is around ai.

Salut Zoé ! Samedi, j'ai fait de la luge avec ma cousine. Ensuite, nous avons bu un chocolat chaud. Je n'ai pas regardé la télé !

  4. Add one negative: Je n'ai pas fait mes devoirs (if that's true!).

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Students read a blog post, identify its features (C2) and use comprehension strategies to follow a past-tense narrative (C1). They then write a blog-style text for a real audience (D1) and edit their verbs (D2). The passé composé with avoir is a key Grade 6 structure that lets your child write about past events.

How to help:

  • At supper, ask Qu'est-ce que tu as fait aujourd'hui ? and accept one-sentence answers: J'ai joué au ballon.
  • Make flash cards of the irregular participles (fait, eu, été, pris, vu, lu, écrit, bu, mis).

Common difficulties:

  • Using the infinitive after avoir (j'ai manger). They sound the same for -er verbs, so check the spelling: mangé.
  • Forgetting the helping verb (Je mangé).
  • Putting pas after the participle (Je n'ai fini pas).

Canadian French used (heard in Québec and other parts of Canada): un blogue, la fin de semaine, des mitaines, la tire d'érable, glisser (to go sledding).
