Taught in French-language schools, which most Québec children attend; the program is published in French only. An updated French program becomes mandatory in 2027-28; in 2026-27 the current program still applies.

Learning to read: letters and sounds, decoding, building a bank of known words, short stories and simple texts
Writing words and short sentences; spelling of common words; capitals and periods
