Remember from Grade 2

In Grade 2 you learned that fluency has three parts: accuracy (the right words), rate (a just-right speed) and expression. You learned to scoop phrases and fix mistakes.

In Grade 3, you will read longer sentences and whole paragraphs, and you will change your pace and expression to fit why you are reading.

Why fluency matters

Fluency is not about racing. It's about reading so smoothly that your brain has room to understand. When you don't have to work hard on every word, you can think about what it means.

The parts of fluency

Pace depends on purpose

Reading an information text to learn facts? Read a bit slower, so the facts stick.
Reading a story aloud to entertain? Read smoothly, speed up in exciting parts and slow down for spooky or sad parts.
Reading a poem? Feel the rhythm and pause at the end of lines when it makes sense.
Reading instructions? Go step by step, and stop to do each step.

Worked example

Let's read a paragraph fluently

Read this information paragraph aloud:

The beaver is one of Canada's national symbols. Beavers build dams across streams with sticks, mud and stones. Did you know that a beaver's front teeth never stop growing? Chewing on trees keeps them from getting too long.

Purpose: to learn facts, so use a calm, clear pace.
Accuracy: check the long words: na-tion-al (-tion says /shun/), sym-bols.
Phrasing: The beaver | is one of Canada's | national symbols. Pause at each period.
Intonation: the question Did you know...? sounds curious, and your voice can go up at the end.
Expression: stress the surprising part: never stop growing.

A clear, calm pace, phrases that make sense, a curious voice for the question and stress on the surprising fact.

Worked example

Let's change expression for a story

Read this story part aloud:

The cabin was dark and silent. Maya crept toward the window. Suddenly, something scratched at the glass! "Who's there?" she whispered. A fluffy raccoon blinked back at her. Maya laughed. "You scared me!"

Purpose: to entertain, so use expression.
First two sentences: slow and quiet, to make it spooky.
Suddenly...!: speed up and sound surprised.
"Who's there?" she whispered.: read it in a whisper, and let your voice rise on the question.
Maya laughed. "You scared me!": sound relieved and happy.

The pace and voice change with the mood: slow and quiet, then fast and surprised, then happy.

Your pace and voice change with the mood of the story: slow and spooky, then fast and surprised, then a whisper, then happy.

Fix-up moves

If something sounds wrong, stop. Ask: Did that make sense? Did it look right?

Go back to the start of the sentence and reread.
Look carefully at the word. Use your long-word plan.
Flex a vowel sound until it makes a real word.

Good readers self-correct all the time. It's a sign you are thinking!

Just for fun

Remember, fluency is not about racing. If it were, cheetahs would be the best readers in the world... and they can't even turn a page!

Hands-on activity

Readers' theatre practice

You need: a short story or poem (or the raccoon story above), a grown-up or sibling, and a phone or tablet to record (optional).

Read 1: Read the text quietly to yourself. Figure out any tricky words.
Read 2: Read it aloud. Draw slashes / between phrases in pencil (on a copy).
Read 3: Add expression. Choose a voice for each character.
Record your third read, or perform it for your family.
Listen back and give yourself a check for: right words ✓, good pace ✓, pauses ✓, expression ✓.

Repeat with the same text on another day. You'll hear yourself get smoother!

For parents and teachers

Big idea: Grade 3 fluency (B2.5) means reading words, complex sentences and paragraphs accurately, at an appropriate pace, with varied expression and intonation that fit the purpose (information vs. story vs. poem vs. instructions). Fluency supports comprehension.

How to help at home:

Repeated reading: have your child read the same short passage 3 times over a few days. Fluency grows fastest this way.
Echo reading: you read a sentence with expression, your child reads it back.
Partner reading: take turns reading pages.
Record and listen back. Children love hearing their progress.

Common difficulties:

Speed reading without expression. Remind your child: "Read it like you're telling it to me."
Word-by-word reading. Model phrasing and use a finger to sweep under phrases.
Skipping small words or endings (-ed, -s). Ask: "Did it look right?"

If your child is reading very slowly or with many errors, talk to their teacher. Teachers can check fluency and give extra support early.
