A. Heritage and Identity

Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities

In this unit you will learn about the roles you play (like son, daughter, student and friend), your relationships with the people around you, and the responsibilities that come with each role. You will see how roles and responsibilities change as you grow, when significant events happen and in different places. You will learn why every person deserves respect, how to care for the natural and built environment, and about the roles of family, community and Elders in First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities. Finally, you will become a social studies detective and use the inquiry process to ask questions, interview people, sort information on charts, timelines and simple maps, and share what you find out.

Every lesson has a hands-on activity to do at home, practice questions and a short quiz.

B. People and Environments

The Local Community

In this unit you will explore your local community: its natural features (like lakes, rivers and hills) and built features (like homes, roads and schools), its different areas, and the services and workers that help people meet their needs. You will learn that your community is on the traditional territory of one or more First Nations (and in some places Métis or Inuit) peoples, and how to find out whose. You will read and draw simple maps with symbols and a legend, use location words, and measure distance with steps and squares. You will discover how people and the environment affect each other, in the short term and the long term, and finish by investigating a question about your own community and sharing what you found.

Every lesson has a hands-on activity to do at home, practice questions and a short quiz.
