B. Active Living / C. Movement Competence

Active, Fit and Skilful

In this unit you will be active in many ways (on your own, with a small group, outdoors in nature and through dance) and find out what makes moving fun for you. You will learn how your heart and lungs work together when you move, how to check how hard you are working, and how to set activity goals. You will learn to play safely, including how to protect your head from a concussion and how to help friends with medical conditions like asthma or allergies. Then you will build your movement skills: balancing with equipment and partners, travelling, jumping and stopping safely, sending and receiving objects (including the overhand throw), and using rules, fair play and tactics in games. Along the way you will practise social-emotional skills: calming down with deep breaths, keeping on trying, reading a partner's body language and encouraging others.

Most practice is Do it and check: try the move, then compare it with what a good attempt looks like. You will need some space indoors or at a park, rolled-up socks or a soft ball, a skipping rope, and a grown-up to play with.

D. Healthy Living

Healthy Living

In this unit you will learn more ways to take care of your body and mind. You will use Canada's Food Guide to choose healthy foods and drinks, plan meals and snacks (and learn what you can and can't control about food), and learn about food allergies and sensitivities and how to keep friends safe. You will practise staying safe at home, outdoors and online, learn about consent and how to stand up for yourself and others, and learn to name your feelings and get along with family and friends. You will learn the difference between prescription and non-prescription medicines, how to use medicine safely, and other ways to stay healthy. Finally, you will learn about the stages of human development, appreciate how your body works, and take care of your teeth.

Some topics in this unit are sensitive. Each lesson has a note for parents. The words and ideas follow the Grade 2 curriculum and are kept simple.
