B. Active Living / C. Movement Competence

Moving and Playing Safely

In this unit you will learn to enjoy being active in many ways, every day: at school, at home and in your community. You will learn about daily physical activity (DPA): how to warm up, move hard for at least 20 minutes and cool down, and how your body feels when it works hard. You will learn to play safely, to balance and travel in many ways, to throw, catch and kick, and to use rules and simple strategies in games. Along the way you will practise social-emotional skills like naming your feelings, keeping on trying and being a good sport.

Most practice in this unit is Do it and check: you try the move, then check it against what a good attempt looks like. You will need a little space, some rolled-up socks or a soft ball, and a grown-up to play with.

Curriculum expectations covered: A1, B1, B2.1, B2.2, B2.3, B3, C1, C2 (Ontario Health and Physical Education, Grades 1–8, 2019, Grade 1).

D. Healthy Living

Healthy Living

In this unit you will learn how to take care of your body and mind. You will learn why we need food and how Canada's Food Guide helps us eat well, and how to listen to your body's hunger, thirst and fullness cues. You will learn the correct names for body parts, including private parts, and how your five senses help you learn and stay safe. You will practise hygiene habits that stop germs, learn to stay safe at home, at school, outdoors and online, and learn about caring behaviours, bullying and consent. Finally, you will learn that mental health is part of being healthy, and how to make healthier choices.

Some topics in this unit are sensitive. Each lesson has a note for parents. The words and ideas follow the Grade 1 curriculum and are kept simple.
