Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories' Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) sets the curriculum. Under an education agreement with British Columbia, the NWT has replaced Alberta's curriculum with B.C.'s redesigned curriculum, adapted with northern and Indigenous content, and alongside it keeps its own Dene Kede and Inuuqatigiit curricula, Our Languages, Northern Studies, and its JK/K program. In 2026-27, Grades 4-6, 7-9, 10 and 11 use the final adapted B.C. documents, and Kindergarten to Grade 3 and Grade 12 use draft versions. High school earns 4-credit courses: graduation needs 80 credits, including Language Arts 10, 11 and 12, Math, Science and Social Studies, Northern Studies 11, Physical and Health Education 10, and Career-Life Education and Career-Life Connections. Students also write B.C.-style literacy and numeracy assessments.
